Welcome to...
Info Highway Lessons! We have been following a path as of late (excluding Current Events) the part of the Information Highway that allows us to access files. We have covered Archie and Veronica. Let us look at a more general term, Gopher...
By definition found on many servers: Software following a simple protocol for tunneling through a TCP/IP internet.
Gopher is also organized in a Menu based struction to access information. It is tree like in structure because one menu will lead you to another. While Archie will bring the information on where you can find your information, Gopher will take you to where the information resides on at the remote site. A feature that particular interest me is that as described in our FTP lesson normaling you have to download the information from the remote site you your local host and then to your PC. With Gopher you can download directly to your PC, thus bypassing one step. This is helpful if for some reason you are short on space at your local site (your space is like the space on your hard disk, you are allotted a certain amount, after that you must begin to delete files inorder to accomodate new info), you can download directly to your PC (granted again you have the space for whatever information you are transfering).
To stay abreast of the latest information about Gopher it would be helpful to send E-Mail to gopher-news-request@boombox.micro.umn.edu. Also you can participate in the UseNet NewsGroup comp.info.systems.gopher. To get the latest Gopher Software you would want to FTP to boombox.micro.umn.edu.
Gopher Client Site are available via the following Telenet addresses using the login of "gopher":
consultant.micro.umn.edu
panda.uiowa.edu
gdunix.gd.chalmere.me
gopher.uiuc.edu
gopher.unt.edu
Gopher allows you to keep bookmarks of information. The following commands will be usefull:
a Adds item to list
A Adds Directory/search
d Deletes item from list
v Views list
Additional prompts will allow you to "press return to continue" and further " press "m" to mail for "s" to save. Note: You will only be able to save if you have an account at the remote site.
This wraps another Lesson! As always, hoping your Cyber-Travels are good ones!
