Television often gives the answer to "automation" in performing task, in the form of Robots. One of the Internet's answers to to finding your information is a Knowbot. Knowbot is the brain child of one Ralph Droms (rdroms@nri.reston.va.us). You can access knowbot via Telnet at nri.reston.va.us 185 or sol.bucknell.edu 185. Knowbot commands are as follows:
help,man,? Help on Knowbot
query
services List of Services
quit or exit Allows you to leave Knowbot
Finger assists in finding users on other systems. User can determine what is displayed when they are fingered by editing their .plan and .project files in their home directories on at their host system. Finger can be executed as follows:
finger
finger @host.domain
Even a partial "user" field will often yield results. Leaving off the "user" info should produce who is logged on at that particular time.
Alternately there you can also you the WHOIS function to find users as follows:
whois -h

Yet another search tool is NetFind which can be accessed via Telnet to bruno.cs.colorado.edu. Your login would be "netfind"
Your search party may be an active UseNet News poster. You can take advantage of the UseNet Database at pit-manager.mit.edu. Your command syntax would be as follows:
mail mail-server@pit-manager.mit.edu
body: send usenet-addresses/
Via Telnet you can go to a server and user the VRFY command, as follows:
VRFY
Another Resource available is the Internet Business Pages (IBP) this was created by MSEN. This will give you businesses on the Net. Via FTP you will find files relative to IBP at ftp.msen.com. You will find the Macintosh Version of IBP in the pub/ibp directory. You can get more info on IBP via mail to ibp-inof@msen.com,with a subject of: send form or at the same FTP site you can use the GET command to get /pub/ibp/ibpform
