Info Highway Lessons...

Hello,

As we continue our CHAT series, we zero in on CHATTING on the NET. On the Commerical Services and BBS's we found that we could often have a chat session, but just sending online messages to another user, while not necessarily being in a Chat or Conference Room. After a series of thoughts back and forth we may or may not decide to join in on a Conference Room Chat. You will find a similar setting on the Internet's Chat/Talk facilities.

(But I thought this was all the Internet? This is lesson, so let's break this up a bit. The Internet can be considered to be made up of various components. Some components may reside on some services while not on others. Those that reside on some provide "Partial Internet Access", while others that provide the majority are considered "Full Internet Access".)

Will a Direct Internet Connection that as the TALK/IRC components you will find similar settings as mentioned in Chat on the other services. TALK would be the one line sentences that you can send from most locations outside of the Conference Room area. IRC would the the Actual Conference Room setting.

Let us look at TALK in this lesson, just as we introduced the on line messages first in the other lessons. Granted the TALK component is enabled at you Information Providers Site, you can initiate it by typing the following:

talk (user address)

talk jesse@rainbow.com

You will be notified if the person is logged on or not via a message indicating the the connection has been established or if letting you know that your party is not online. You also will be notified when someone wishes to talk with you. Due to various operating systems you may have to respond with "ntalk" as opposed to "talk" and the user address. The Control D or C will usually exit you from a Talk setting.

For Macintosh owners, granted there is an MacTCP session established you can use MacTalk by selecting TALK from the File Pull Down Menu. MacTalk will show status lines indicating the attempt to initiate the talk session with the remote system.

With Internet Talk there is also a radio program called Internet Talk Radio. This is the brainchild of one Carl Malamud. The program is sponsored by Sun MicroSystems and O'Reilly and Associates. Internet Gurus are guest on the show and are the featurerd "Geek of the Week".

The resource Information for Internet Talk Radio is as follows:
