Hello All,
We look this week again at current events. My first impression when I read this was, "Say it ain't so!". It seems to be a case of, "Use my online service, and you'll never go back to another, whether you want to or not"...
Most buyers have clawed at the shrink-wrap, slipped the disks into their computer and watched Windows 95 go to work. But many others have called the company, their faith shaken. They've found the marketing (we're selling lifestyle here, pal) is different, but the computer is still a jumble of wires with arcane commands.
Microsoft says customers wait anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, as 1,600 engineers try to answer all the calls. Many are from novice users, who are taking 30 minutes to get walked through the installation process, said a spokeswoman.
But some callers are not neophytes, but people who clicked onto the Microsoft icon for the Internet connection, and watched as the information for their other Internet providers is automatically deleted. Could this be bad Bill Gates at his worst?
Figuring out how to restore the old Internet connection is difficult, say Internet service providers and some customers might take the path of least resistence. They could just forget the whole thing and go with Microsoft's connection -- the Microsoft Network.
Microsoft says the problem is a technical glitch, which it is working on. (Silicon Valley computer heads are having a good smirk over that one). If anyone calls the help line, Microsoft says they will get walked through the process of bringing back other online services.
Glitch? Your thoughts? These things happen? Info Highway minds want to know!
We wrap another lesson! Hoping your Cyber-Travels are returnable ones!
