Hello all,
We continue looking at the Big Picture of the Information super highway. This weeks Focus is on the Common Carriers. The three most common long distance carriers are AT&T, Sprint, and MCI. The lines that these carriers operate are relied upon by the Internet.
The common carries have very few operating restrictions and can provide one of the popular components of the Internet known as Email. Also they can provide storage space as well as directories.
The Carriers are in business and to that end they as any business look for ways to satisfy the growing needs of their customers. There seems to alway be a leader amongst any group. Among the Carriers, AT&T stands out. Imagine a track record of at least 10 years with a Annual Sales exceeding fifty billion. One of their centers, located in Bedminster, New Jersey, handles more than one hundred fifteen million calls a day. The switching Networks commnunicate with LANs using Novell Technology. On the topic of Electronic Mail, they use Easylink, which handles mail and telex for more than one hundred sixty countries.
AT&T, realizes that like any business to succeed, often you must tap into the global markets. They have and are continuing to do so anticipating that fifty percent of revenues fo the 21st Century will coming from these markets.
The Global System of AT&T is called World Partners. They have made the following investment (remember the last lesson on The Baby Bells):
1) In Europe alliance with Unisource a consortium of Dutch,Swiss and Swedish telephone authorities.
MCI has also done this as follows:
1) MCI joined British Telecommunications PLC in a joint venture called Concerte. This was a 4.5 Billion Dollare deal.
Sprint has also joined in on the fun as follows:
1) Sprint sold 20 percent of itself to French and German national carriers. This was a 4.2 Billion Dollar deal.
As the Carries lauch out into International Territory, it is said that the communication links will become more sophisticated. We are able to see voice messaging with video. Technology will allow for processing data from company to company (orders, billing) without human intervention through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).
