As mentioned earlier this weeks lesson, focuses on the the concept of Wireless Communications. We continue our coverage of these Emerging Technologies. Among the many things that I do, I am a Value Added Reseller (VAR). My distributor Ingram Micro, called a special morning session, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel here in NY. It was interesting seeing the gathering of the other VARS and the Distributors Reps. VARS are always on call so it was amusing to see a beeper go off and everyone look down at theirs . I'm usually on Vibrate so I didn't feel anything . Beepers, Cellular Phone all play apart in the growing (emerging) technology of Wireless communications...
Wireless Communications, allows for the no longer depending on the certain hardware and may software that could have bound you to a certain area. My customers can reach me via an 800 number. I not tied to a phone waiting for that important call. Financial Traders in the Wall St. area have pageres that alert them of movements in a particular currency. They don't have to be tied to a reuters news computer monitor. They can have the lastest news sent directly to their pagers.
Cellular phone subscribtions have jumped from 1 million in 1986 to about 20 million today according to one report. Revenues are expected to approach 10 billion annually by the turn of the century. As we have been mentioning in past lessons, Digital is the way to go. When we say wireless we are basically referring to three types of communications. They being as follows:
1) Paging
2) Delayed two-way communications
3) two-interactive
Paging is just sending the info you a pager one way. Delayed two way can be compared to UseNet News Messaging. You type a message and wait for a reponse later,possibly the next day. Two Way Interactive can be compared to Internet Relay Chat. It's real time. As you are sending you can get replys at the same time.
In the attempt to move into the Digital Arena, as I alway mention, there are companies who are leading the pack. One such is Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD). In the current environment as messages are sent out, they are "queued" up. With CDPD, message are just sent out immediately.
Again we are dealing with most importantly getting the information out to the consumer and those who can do this effectively and effeciently will remain at the forefront of this technology.
