We pause our regularly scheduled lessons (we continue next week on the topic of Fiber Optics)... for Current Events... It was the 4th Largest in History...Some said it totalled more than a million, some said it was four hundrend thousand, it was the Million Man March and this is how some reports online read...
(Oct. 17) President Clinton spoke in Austin, Texas, earlier this week as the "Million Man March" took place in Washington, D.C. The rally, billed as a day of atonement and an assumption of responsibility, drew tens of thousands of black men from all parts of the country. Organized by Nation of Islam head Louis Farrakhan, the day at the Washington mall began in controversy and continued in affirmation. In Texas, the president praised the objectives of the march while criticizing the divisiveness of its leader, whom he did not call by name.
Members of CompuServe's U.S. News and White House forums voiced doubts as well as hopes for the march. U.S. News Forum member Steve Tursky says, "We cannot let a man like Louis Farrakhan force us to dwell on his remarks. We have to go beyond him and embrace the broad mission of this march and its consequences. We should also let them solve their own problems in their own ways."
U.S. News Forum participant "Tony" answers, "However, the Million Man March is not a march about ideals or principles, it is simply a march about race. This type of demonstration can do nothing but sever the relations between races even further."
White House Forum member Eric L. Metzner says, "My own feeling is that African-Americans have been victimized for several hundred years in the U.S., up to and continuing today, and 'atonement' is then a reactionary motivation. Yes, there are serious concerns within the community that need addressing."
The event will stimulate challenging discussion concerning race relations in America.
