Info Highway Lessons...

Hello All,

And the beat goes on and the lessons continue...

Uh....exactly WHEN did the Internet thing start? The year was 1969. It has been noted that the exact date was January 2. This was brought about by the U.S. Goverment and funded by th Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA in some circles known as ARPANET).

Information was moving via the method of packet switching (information by the chunkfulls, for lack of a better term). Six years after this historic date this network fell under the wings of the U.S. Defense Department for Research purposes. So were now in the year 1975. Well those know a little about the Defense structure can understand whe ARPANET had to split into the Military and Civilian applications. The Name ARPANET continued and was used by for Civilian applications, while the Military applications were handled by MILNET. MILNET stayed on the application Side, while ARPANET was more experiment based. Even though they split the connection between the two became known as DARPA Internet, which became the Internet as we know it today.

Access to ARPANET as many have heard was limited to Military and University research. Of courese when one Network arise, everybody joins in on the fun. Another Network arose called BITNET. Before today I couldn't tell you what BITNET stood for to save my life. The "BIT", stands for "Because it's Time". It was not originally part of the Internet, but within time it became a part. Most Networks have a foundation or Building Block. So as everyone was "joining in", another Network the National Science Foundation (NSF) became a point for more reasearchers. The Net NSFNET is the foundation for the U.S. Internet. This Net brings in connections via various methods such as fiber-optic. Remember the "Bandwidth"? This is the BackBone, means for transmitting info. (Those familiar with Networks such as FidoNet, will know the term, File Bone).

I guess you can say that the info moved at the best possbile rate at the time, but as the "Bandwidth" lesson taught us their are optimal methods available. So in 1988, NSF brought on the methods of T1 & T3 lines. Again, I'm no techie here to me these have been referred to as allowing better speed and reliability.

So, this wraps up the Internet, "From where we've come", hopefully in futher lessons we'll cover where we are and where were going if the Technology doesn't change to rapidly !

Hoping your CyberTravels are Knowledgeable ones!

Oh yeah, out TIP of the Week!
