Info Highway Lessons...

Hello All,

We have heard mentioned in various messages, "Have you got the list name" or "I just subscribed to that list". What are people talking about? The subject is Mailing Lists. These are very popular They may be used to communicate to a group of individuals. These groups usually have a an similar interest, such as the AA Student list or the BDPA list both which actually exist.

To take part in such a group discussion, you would want to join or subscribe to the list. Every message that is typed is sent to all of the users in that list. What is unique about the list distribution is that you can be a part as long as you have an Internet Email Account. You don't have to belong to a Major Online Service you merely need an Internet Email Account and the appropriate approval from you provider that you can in fact receive Mailing List info. You will find members of a list who may reside on Compuserve, Prodigy,America Online, A State Univerisity, A Bulletin Board, or a Full Internet Provider Service. The key here is that the persons have access to an Internet Email Account to receive the messages. So I may be a part of various Mailing Lists and receive Email at any one of my addresses as follows:

holmanm@haven.ios.com michael.holman.sr@f511.n278.z1.fidonet.org 71613.3064@compuserve.com djme02a@prodigy.com

I could be a member of any list of my choosing using the address above the meets the appropriate requirements mentioned above.

Well these list must be maintained by somebody. This can be a person or a computer. If it is a computer is often referred to as a listserver. In order to join a list you merely send a message to the maintainer or administrator of the list. As noted that it is maintained by a computer or person, this often sets precedence on how we will join. Of course we must send an email message. What is in that message is key. If we are sending the message to a person, the body of the message can be a personal note requesting access. Often the we must get access by sending our note to a computer. Computers talk in Computer Language and look for computer commands. In most cases your subject will be "subscribe fullname" and the body will be left blank.

It may seem strange, but you will find that not all of the messages posted by a user actually make it to the whole list. In these cases the reason is usually because the list is "moderated". In non-moderated lists, as soon as you type you message, it goes out the the entire list. Alternaely in moderated list your message goes first to the moderator, who determines its appropriateness for the list. If deemed appropriate, it will be sent to the list, if deemed not so, no one on the list will every see it. Some people prefer moderated lists as they are certain that all message will maintain the flow of the purpose of the list. Others prefer non-moderated lists as they do not care for the delay due to the "screening" process.

Well this wraps up this week's lesson! Hoping your Cyber-Travels are great ones!
