Info Highway Lessons...

Hello all!

This week we do another Current Events item. Last week we focused on the SysOp Arrest. This week we go to the filp side, the User. The story has been discussed no doubt in may realms of CyberSpace. It is touched upon in the current issue of BoardWatch's Editorial Section. It is... "The Internet's Most Wanted" subtitled "To Catch a Hacker"...

It took nearly over two years to do it but this guy was caught by FBI Agents. He was a Thirty One yearold Computer Expert. His charges were a long list of crimes such as stealing computer data and credit card numbers from whatever system they could be found.

His name is Kevin D. Mitnic and he has been labled as on of "The Internet's Most Wanted". After an aproxmiate twenty four hour stake out of his apartment building, he was nabbed. He has actually been "on the run" since the year 1992. His access to many "trade secrets", labeled him as a serious threat.

As normal in most crimes, his over confidence led to his down fall. Among his many break in, he stumbed upon one of another computer expert, on the right side fo the law. One Mr. Tsutomu Shimoura, another expert in his field. His posts on the Internet were done in such a way as to not identify where they were in essence originating.

Mr Shimoura, made it his business to track this guy down. Though he was scheduled to be vacationing elsewhere, when he found out about the intrusion, his plans changed. His system was one that was setup so that if tampering was done an alert message would be sent to other Computer Security Officials with who he worked.

Using his own Computer Skills and programs and actually riding around with Electronic Devised Antenna, he tracked down his man, who was using a cellular phone in Raleigh, N.C. Once he was able to pin point his direct location his task was over and it was time for the FEDS to move in and they did. After the catch, during the pre-arraignment hearing, the two met face to face. Mr. Mitnick turned to Mr. Simmomura and said,"Hello Tsutomu, I respect your skills".

Mr Mitnick, gained national attention in the year 1982 when as a teen-ager, armed with computer and a modem he broke into a North American Air Defense Command computer.
